Using Lijn
Add the books you own, read them, and keep your place. Lijn needs no account.
Add books
Lijn reads CBZ, CBR, CBT, PDF, and DjVu comics, and EPUB, MOBI, AZW3, FB2, and TXT books. Add them in one of four ways:
- Tap Import and choose files or a whole folder in Files.
- Use Open in Lijn from another app.
- Drag files from another app onto the library.
- Download from a catalogue. See Servers.
Import runs in the background. Each book appears on the shelf when it is ready. A small indicator shows what is left. A book that is already in the library is not added twice.
If a folder comes from Calibre, Lijn reads the Calibre metadata next to each book.
The library
The library shows your books as covers in a grid, or as a list. Each series is one stack. Open the stack to see the tomes in order. When a tome is missing, the shelf says which one.
Up Next shows the next unread tome of each series you are reading. Continue Reading opens the book you had open last.
- Filters
- All, Favorites, Unread, Reading, Finished, Recent, and Books.
- Sort
- By last read, title, author, progress, rating, date added, or format.
- Series
- Lijn groups a series from the metadata. To group by hand, drag one album onto another.
- Select
- Select several books to delete them, add them to a collection, move them to a series, edit their details, or mark them read or unread.
Search
Search looks at the title, series, authors, publisher, ISBN, summary, tags, and language of every book. It also reads the text printed on the covers. Results come in order of relevance.
Collections
A collection is a shelf you make yourself. Give it a name, an icon, and a colour. Put collections inside collections. Pin a collection to the filter bar.
A smart collection fills itself from rules: publisher, author, genre, format, tag, reading status, language, date, rating, progress, or page count. Choose whether a book must match all rules or any rule.
Reading
Comics open one page at a time, or as a double-page spread. Pages turn like paper. Manga opens right to left. Webtoons scroll from top to bottom. Lijn remembers the mode and the direction for each album.
Books open in a reader made for text. Choose a theme, a font, the size, the margins, and the line spacing. Illustrated books open like comics.
See Gestures and shortcuts for the controls.
Bookmarks and notes
Mark a page with a bookmark. Each bookmark can have a note and a colour. Add a text note, a highlight, or a drawing to a comic page. In a book, highlight a passage. Export your notes as Markdown, JSON, or an annotated PDF.
Details
Lijn reads the title, series, tome, authors, and summary from the file itself. When it needs more, use Find Metadata. Lijn asks the catalogue you choose and shows what would change. Nothing changes until you accept. See Formats.
You can also edit the details of one book, or of several books at once.
Siri, Shortcuts, and widgets
Ask Siri to continue reading, to open a comic or a collection, to search the library, or to mark a book as read. Four home-screen widgets show Continue Reading, Recently Added, the Library, and Up Next. Your books also appear in Spotlight search.
Lijn speaks English, French, and Japanese.
Your data
There is no account. Your files, library, bookmarks, and notes stay on your iPad. Lijn sends nothing to us.
Your place in each album can follow you between your iPads through iCloud. This is on by default. Turn it off in Settings. When you close a book from Komga or Kavita, your progress goes back to that server. See Privacy.
Purchase
Lijn is free for the first ten albums you open. One purchase unlocks the rest of your library. There is no subscription. Every later version is included.
